Prepare now for winter weather

1. Make a storm kit now

Whether it's a January blizzard or a tornado in June, storms are part of life in the Midwest. And they sometimes cause power outages. The time to prepare for them is now, before they occur. This video outlines the items you may want to include. It also includes a few items for more severe situations, like a tornado, when you could be trappend in your home or without running water.

Be sure all family members know where the kit is, in case you're not home and an outage occurs.

2. Check out our Storm Center

You can access it on your computer or through your mobile device if it has internet capability. In an outage, it’s your best source for information on areas affected, our progress in getting lights back on, safety tips and other useful information.

3. Be sure to let us know right away if you lose your power

If you have cell phone internet capability, report it online at www.kcpl.com > Report an outage

Or call:  1-888- 544-4852.  Our response line is automated, because that’s the fastest way to get your information to our crews.

If you need to speak to a customer service representative, call 816-471-5275 or 1-888-471-5275.

Add surge protection

Over time, small surges in your home's electrical system can damage your iPad, blu-ray player, big screen TV and other sensitive electronics.

For only $5.95 a month, KCP&L will install a meter-based surge protection device at your home to stop any surges at the source.
