Reliability and Operational Excellence

KCP&L recognizes our customer's need for operational excellence from its utility provider.  KCP&L provides Tier 1 reliability to its customers.  The company has invested heavily in system efficiency and dependability, resulting in system reliability being among the top 25 percent of utilities nationwide.  KCP&L is the 2009 recipient of the National Reliability Excellence Award by PA Consulting for the third year in a row and earned J.D Power & Associates top tier rating for commercial customers.

The company has also been presented the 2007 Edison Electric Institute's Edison Award.  This award is recognized as the highest industry honor presented annually to the top utility in the nation. KCP&L has a track record of excellent reliability and has earned recognition by industry partners.

In major emergencies, KCP&L has resources throughout the service area and has mutual assistance agreements with utilities nationwide. KCP&L's Customer Call Center (including the Automated Outage Reporting System), Distribution System Operations (DSO) and Operation crews are all available 24/7 to respond quickly to outages. The System Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA), with remote sensing, immediately will alarm the DSO in the event of a transmission, substation transformer or substation breaker problem.

The Outage Management System (OMS) tracks outages so problem areas can be identified for preventative maintenance. In the event of a major outage, the System Evaluation and Restoration Plan (SERP) is activated to quickly evaluate damage, determine where crews are needed and determine if additional resources from other utilities are needed.  KCP&L received the Mutual Assistance Award from the Edison Electric Institute.
